Tucked between the tranquil arms of Grand Traverse Bay, the Old Mission Peninsula is more than a place of natural beauty—it is a rare and providential environment for winemaking. At Ascension Wine Co., we believe that location is not only a matter of climate and soil, but also of calling. Our presence on the peninsula is not incidental; it is deeply intentional, and essential to the quality and purity of the wine we offer to the Church.

A Microclimate Made for the Vine

Old Mission Peninsula is one of Michigan’s most celebrated American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). Surrounded on three sides by water, the peninsula benefits from a unique maritime climate that extends the growing season well into the fall—crucial for ripening grapes to their fullest potential. Cool nights and warm days allow sugars to develop slowly, preserving the natural balance and sweetness essential for our liturgical wine.

This slow ripening process produces fruit with complexity, depth, and structure—qualities that are vital for crafting the sweet red wine traditionally used in Orthodox worship.

Soil with a Sacred Yield

The peninsula’s glacial soils—rich in minerals, well-drained, and gently rolling—offer ideal conditions for viticulture. These soils, combined with the careful cultivation of high-quality grape varietals, allow us to produce wines that are both naturally sweet and profoundly expressive.

In every harvest, we see the hand of God: the harmony of soil, sun, and season working together to yield fruit that is worthy of the altar.

Beauty, Reverence, and Stillness

Beyond its viticultural excellence, Old Mission Peninsula offers something more—something intangible yet essential: a spirit of peace.

The quiet landscapes, rolling vineyards, and shoreline vistas lend a sense of stillness to our work. Here, winemaking is not hurried or mechanical. It is contemplative. Reverent. And deeply connected to the natural rhythms of the land. For a winery whose mission is to serve the sacred, this setting could not be more fitting.

A Place Set Apart

In Orthodox tradition, sacred things are always set apart. They are consecrated—dedicated entirely to the service of God. In much the same way, Old Mission Peninsula offers a place set apart from the noise and haste of the world. It gives us the space and silence to produce wine with integrity, focus, and devotion.

At Ascension Wine Co., we do not simply make wine. We prepare a liturgical offering. And there is no better place to do this holy work than on the blessed ground of Old Mission.

From Earth to Altar

Every bottle of wine we craft carries the character of this land. And every vineyard row we tend is a testament to our belief: that beauty, tradition, and devotion belong together. Old Mission Peninsula is not just where we work. It is where our offering begins.
